As cat parents we all know that playing with our cat is very important; there are a wealth of benefits for your cat and you when you play together.
Especially the way we live our lives today, with being so busy, our cats at home need to play to relieve the monotony of eating, snoozing and using the litter box.
Without play your cat will become bored and may also have behaviour problems. Cats also need play for good old exercise and keeping weight off (just like us). By putting a bit of fun in your cat’s life you will have a happier, more confident kitty. You probably will be too!
Top 7 Tips For A Better Playtime
1. Do play with your cat using toys that mimic what a cat’s normal predatory play would be; hunting is a natural instinct for cats and so play is a chance to develop these essential hunting skills.
2. Do imitate prey’s natural movements to help develop your cats hunting abilities; draw toys away from your cat encouraging them to chase and catch.
3. Do vary the toys that you play with so there is something stimulating and interesting for your cat. Cats really enjoy playing with toys that mimic small animals and insects, which is most likely what they would hunt in the wild. Good toys to go for are small, fluffy or feathery, make an interesting noise or move.
4. Do consider motorised toys; ones that move in an erratic manner, again mimicking prey. If using a laser pointer toy, make sure you finish the play session with a toy that your cat can physically catch. Make sure you do let you cat catch the toy and have a good tousle with it.
5. Do be creative when playing with your cat. Half hide feathers behind cushions or rugs. Use tunnels or boxes to vary the terrain and challenging for your cat to catch the toy.
6. Do supervise you cat when they are playing; you need to interact with them to create a happy bond between you. You can also make sure they do not cause themselves harm by eating or chewing on a toy they shouldn’t.
7. Do store your cats toys in a safe place, to keep your cat safe.
Cats needs stimulation, especially if they’re an indoor cat or spend most of their time indoors. Cats need fun in their lives, just like humans need it.
