Which Flowers Are Poisonous To Cats

Poisonous Flowers For Cats

As cat parents we have a responsibility to make sure that our home offers the safe environment for our cats to thrive. Flowers that are poisonous to cats can very easily enter our home and potentially cause great harm.

It’s so horrible to see poisoning in any animal, but in our precious little cat who depends on us in so many ways the ordeal is heart wrenchingly awful!

But, there’s a problem. If you’re anything like me, you love having fresh flowers in the house. It brightens up a room, smells lovely and just makes me feel happy. It’s also such a lovely present to receive from someone else.

When we were preparing our home for Diesel and Eliza, we were told to avoid poisonous flowers like lilies!

I had never realised that some flowers were poisonous for cats if ingested, or that cats would even take an interest in a bunch of flowers.

But, surely flowers and cats can live together happily? What is safe to have in a vase, that I will still like? And if any of the cats do try and nibble on the flowers, what’s not going to harm them?

Have a look at the infographic below to help you avoid these 10 poisonous flowers for your cats.

Why it’s best to avoid these flowers

Here’s a link to Cats Protection who give some great advice about what to do if you think your cat is poisoned.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAT SAFE AROUND FLOWERS

Obviously, it goes without saying that these flowers in particular should be avoided completely. But what else can be done to keep your cat safe?

1

Let your friends, partner and family (the ones who’d buy you flowers!) know about what cat-friendly flowers you’d love to receive and let them know the poisonous flowers to avoid!

2

Try to display your cat-friendly flowers in places that your cat is unlikely to want to investigate further. Is there a way of hanging the flowers so your cats can’t reach them?

3

Distract your cat from wanting to munch the pretty flowers by putting out cat grass for them instead.

4

Try placing a natural cat repellent where you display your flowers.
